We’re proud to have supported Friends of Redland School in Chippenham with a £2,000 grant to help resurface the school’s Daily Mile track.

The parent-led fundraising group works to raise additional resources and experiences for pupils at Redland Primary School that go beyond the school’s core budget.

The Daily Mile is a national initiative which encourages primary aged children to walk for one mile a day at school, to improve their health and wellbeing. The school’s existing Daily Mile track is used by pupils of all ages to build physical activity into their daily routine, but over time the surface has become uneven and unusable in parts.

Our grant will help towards the cost of resurfacing the track with a smooth, all-weather tarmac finish. This will make the space safer, more durable and fully accessible for all pupils, including wheelchair users, so everyone can take part in daily exercise whatever the weather.

The improved track will play an important role in supporting children’s physical and mental wellbeing by giving them the opportunity to incorporate exercise into their daily routine. It will also create new opportunities for wider school activities, including sports days and community events.

Many GSA customers and their families live near Redland School and are expected to benefit from the new track.

Marie Matthews, Co-Secretary of Friends of Redland School, said: “The Friends of Redland School are very grateful to have received this funding from GSA. We’re excited for the track renovation to be complete for the coming academic year.

“This funding has enabled us to provide a safe and accessible running/movement space for all children to use throughout the year. We also look forward to being able to use the area to offer new events, such as a colour run.”

The grant follows a successful application to our Community Impact Fund, which supports projects that improve health and wellbeing, the environment, or life and employment skills for GSA customers. Grants of up to £2,000 per year are available to resident groups, community projects and local charities, made possible thanks to generous social value donations from our suppliers.
