Love is in the air at Amber Wood
Last week, Cupid was spotted around our Amber Wood care home in Burton-on-Trent as residents and their loved ones enjoyed a special meal.
On Wednesday 8 February, colleagues at Amber Wood, one of our dementia specialist care providers, hosted a Valentines date night to allow for residents who are in relationships to enjoy some quality time.
Lucie Willday, Registered Manager at Amber Wood, said: “Going for a romantic meal on Valentine’s Day might be something that we can take for granted.
“However, for couples where one or both of the parties suffer from dementia, going out to eat might be very challenging not least because the behaviours that accompany dementia can sometimes be difficult to manage.
“At Amber Wood we strive to give our customers a rich experience and we wanted them to be able to enjoy a sit down meal, in a supported environment, with their significant others.”
Following a consultation with families and customers, it was decided that the menu for the evening would be a three-course meal consisting of a choice of either prawn cocktail or tomato soup for a starter and a chippy tea for the main course.
Those with a sweet tooth could decide between strawberry cheesecake or chocolate gateau for pudding accompanied by either cream or ice cream. As a final flourish, the diners were offered a dessert platter of chocolates, strawberries, and brownies with a coffee.
The event received fantastic support from local businesses with The Florist Gate in Anslow donating eight red roses for each of the couples and The Little Dessert Shop in Burton-on-Trent generously supplying the platter of sweet treats.
Amber Wood provides a range of specialist dementia care and support services to people with a range of needs, including older adults (over 55 years), people with dementia and associated mental health conditions, older adults with physical disabilities and people with hearing or eyesight difficulties (or both).
