If a fire breaks out in another part of your building
The most important thing to remember is that unless the fire is in your flat or smoke or heat from a fire are affecting you, you must stay in your home. This is by far the safest place for you to be. The block you live in was built to contain a fire inside a flat for at least an hour – giving the fire service plenty of time to arrive and deal with it before it spreads.
Large numbers of people trying to leave at the same time can cause serious risks to people who live in the block and the firefighters tackling a blaze.
In the unlikely event the building needs to be evacuated, the fire service will let you know and manage this carefully to keep everyone safe.
If a fire breaks out inside your home
If smoke or heat are affecting your home or the fire is in your flat, you should leave immediately, closing the door behind you.
You should leave the building through the nearest emergency exit and call 999. Never use a lift.
It is important you leave as soon as possible and don’t stop to collect personal belongings or return to your flat until it is confirmed you are safe to do so.
If your block has a designated assembly point, head there as soon as you can. This will help the fire service make sure everyone is safe.
