At GSA, we’re proud to support colleagues as they grow and develop their careers. One standout example is Charlie Jones, who recently stepped into his new role as Project Manager.

Charlie began his journey with us in 2019 as an Apprentice Project Officer and has steadily progressed through hard work, learning, and the support of his team.

We spoke to Charlie to learn more about his journey and hear his thoughts on the apprenticeship route.

“I’ve worked at GSA for six years now, starting as an Apprentice Project Officer and now stepping into my new role as Project Manager.

When I left Sixth Form, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career-wise, but I knew I wanted to start earning and building a future. I decided to take the apprenticeship route, which offered the chance to learn, gain qualifications, and work at the same time.

I started with a Level 3 Business Administration course, which I completed through a flexible route that allowed me to balance work and study. The flexibility really suited my learning style, and I was able to link my coursework directly to the projects I was working on. Thanks to the support from my colleagues at GSA, I earned a Distinction in April 2020.

Keen to continue developing in Project Management, I began a second apprenticeship in 2023. This time, I joined a cohort with apprentices from other organisations like McDonald’s, Lidl, and a local council. It was fascinating to hear different perspectives and approaches to project work.

Over 18 months, I completed 17 units, an exam, a final presentation, and an interview. I gained two qualifications: APM Project Management (SCQF Level 7) and Associate Project Manager Level 4. The course gave me a deeper understanding of project management principles and allowed me to apply new skills to real projects, like the Care and Support Butterfly Planned Programme.

These apprenticeships have helped me build confidence, independence, and strong internal networks across GSA. I now feel well-equipped to manage larger, more complex projects and contribute more strategically to the business.

I’d absolutely recommend apprenticeships to anyone, whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow in your current role. There are flexible learning options to suit different styles, and the experience can open doors you might not expect.

I’m excited about this next step in my career and look forward to continuing my journey with GSA.”

We’re proud to support our 16 apprentices currently developing their skills across industries including adult care, accountancy, procurement, legal, installation and maintenance, construction, and digital and technology solutions.
