Proposal to increase number of social homes on Oate Hill, Chippenham unveiled

Great Somerford 2

We are proposing to increase the number of affordable homes in a residential street adjacent to London Road, Chippenham.

Subject to approvals, including planning consent, we are proposing to demolish 14 homes in Oate Hill, Chippenham, and replace them with up to 25 new affordable homes built using modern methods of construction, ensuring they are energy efficient and in keeping with current standards.

Oate Hill joins three other sites across North Wiltshire where we are proposing to use land we own to provide more social and affordable homes. Other locations in the Wiltshire Asset Maximisation project include:

  • Dixon Way, Calne where we are proposing to replace four of our existing homes with up to nine new social homes
  • The Rosary, Royal Wootton Bassett, where we are proposing to demolish eight homes to make room for up to 24 affordable homes.
  • Brooklands, Brinkworth, where we are proposing to remove 13 homes we currently manage and replace them with up to 26 new affordable homes.

Subject to securing the necessary approvals, we will be providing a total of up to 84 new affordable homes across the four sites, more than doubling the current provision of affordable housing, the majority of which will be let for a social rent with some properties available for shared ownership.

All the proposed new homes will be built using modern methods of construction, ensuring they are energy efficient and in keeping with current standards.

The first public consultations have been held for Dixon Way, The Rosary and Brooklands with a date set later this month for Oate Hill. There will also be further opportunities for the public to have their say on our proposals for new homes in a second round of public consultations for all four sites.

Corrina Johnson, our New Business and Development Manager said “We are excited to work on these proposals to improve the quality and quantity of much-needed affordable housing in Chippenham and North Wiltshire.

“Along with other drivers for the projects, improving the properties that our customers call home and making better use of land we own to provide more affordable housing are key priorities.

“We are calling this collection of projects Wiltshire Asset Maximisation and have worked closely with colleagues from across the business to progress our proposals. I would like to thank all those who have worked so hard to get us to this stage.

“We are currently at the design and consultation stage and preparing to submit planning applications later this year. We welcome feedback from our customers, Wiltshire residents and local elected representatives at all tiers of Government. We will use the information collected at the consultations to help us fine-tune our proposals.”

Customers who live in the homes who are directly affected by the proposals have all been visited by GSA and have a named contact who they can direct any queries or concerns to.

If the proposals get the green light the current occupants living in the homes will be supported throughout the project. This includes being offered tailored support to find a suitable new home, compensation, and support with their move. They will also be offered a new build home on the scheme once construction is complete.
